I find this interesting in that the belief is that the people are part of the land, if anyone had a haircut or cut their finger nails the cut hair and nails were buried in a place known only to the person the hair or nails came from, the belief was that they came from the land, so they return to the land whether it's hair, finger nails or body, the spirit, or wairua is a separate part of a person..
